Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus was in Atlanta, Georgia from September 27-29, 2014 to lead and participate in the preparatory Gala for World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates 2015 announcing that Atlanta will host the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates in 2015. President Jimmy Carter and Professor Yunus are the co-hosts and CNN Founder Ted Turner is the Honorary Chair for the Atlanta Summit.
The gala on 28 September evening was attended by 730 political, business and social leaders including Ambassador Andrew Young , Nathan Deal, Governor of the State of Georgia, Jason Carter gubernatorial candidate for upcoming election and grandson of President Jimmy Carter, Senator Sam Nunn, lifelong activist to eliminate nuclear stockpile, Dennis Lockhart, President of Federal Reserve System of Atlanta, Johnny Isakson, US Senator from Georgia, among many other luminaries. The organizers of the 2015 World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates are Yunus Creative Lab of Atlanta, the City of Atlanta, and the Permanent Secretariat of the Nobel Peace Laureates.
The World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates is one of the world’s most important events for promoting democratic values, freedom and peace. The Summit will consist of three and a half days of debate and meetings to discuss the challenges of global civilization and the means to support democracy and world peace. Topics will include human rights, women’s empowerment, global health, nuclear threats, technology, youth, poverty and global peace.
"Atlanta deserves to be the host city for the Nobel Laureates for many reasons,” Professor Yunus said in his speech on Friday mentioning the city’s history in civil and human rights. “Atlanta has a great tradition of fighting for human rights.There is a heritage of peace starting with Martin Luther King, President Carter, Andrew Young and Ted Turner. This is a tradition for Atlanta, this is its heritage." He declared Atlanta as the City of Peace.
Yunus said he envisions Atlanta hosting a “Global March for Peace” event, bringing participants from all countries of the world, during the Nobel Summit in 2015, and he added that from 2015 it could become an annual event.
It is expected that, the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates will feature over 2,000 global leaders from all around the globe and over 25,000 students to engage in discussions and activities to promote global peace.
In addition, Dr. Yunus participated in Panel Discussion on “Global Security – Most Relevant Issues” on public radio. He addressed a meeting of the Rotary Club of Atlanta and appeared in a live interview at CNN at its headquarters in Atlanta.
